Why I Became A Financial Advisor

By Paul Fenner, CFP®, ChFC®, CRPS®

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the anxiety and distress caused by financial insecurity. Coming from a middle-class background, I knew from an early age that there had to be a better way. Combined with my fascination with the stock market, this planted the seeds for a future career in the finance industry as a professional financial advisor. However, as in any compelling story, there were unexpected turns that ignited my passion and provided a clear vision of how I could make a positive impact in the lives of others.

The First Steps

With a general sense of my life's direction, I pursued a bachelor's degree from Adrian College and later earned an MBA from the University of Findlay. After graduation, I embarked on a fulfilling journey in engineering, accounting, finance, and operations, holding significant professional financial advisor roles in large corporations that eventually led me to become the CFO of a private equity company. Throughout my corporate career, I gained invaluable knowledge and experience.

However, a significant shift occurred in my personal life (the surprise I alluded to earlier) when my wife and I welcomed triplets into our family, followed closely by another child. Balancing demanding careers, my wife and I realized the value of time. The time spent managing financial responsibilities took away precious moments we wanted to enjoy with our family. Additionally, the magnitude of this transition brought financial anxiety. Recognizing that many families faced similar challenges, I decided to leverage my professional financial advisor skills and expertise to help them achieve their goals and pursue financial security without sacrificing more time away from what they love.
